Jolie ends Afghan visit with call for more returnee support

The UN refugee agency’s Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie has concluded her first visit to Afghanistan, where she saw both the successes and the difficulties of return and reintegration. She saw first hand the country’s difficult humanitarian circumstances and called for more international support to meet critical needs during the coming winter.

Jolie’s two-day trip comes ahead of an international conference on return and reintegration to be held in Kabul next month. Co-hosted by Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UNHCR, the event will bring government ministries and donors together to see how the country’s absorption capacity can best be strengthened to support further repatriation. Angelina Jolie Records PSA for World Refugee Day

Angelina Jolie has recorded a public service announcement for World Refugee Day on June 20, to help raise awareness about the plight of millions of people at risk.

As emotive scenes of refugees flash on the screen, Jolie – who is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency – explains what life is like for millions around the world.

“They have survived war, they have survived displacement, they have survived rape, they have survived hunger and disease,” say the actress (who is expecting twins with Brad Pitt this summer). “For those who have survived and for those who did not, we are thinking of you on this day.”

Angelina Jolie criticises Iraq war spending

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie called for the world to get its “priorities in order” Wednesday, saying that the amount of money spent in Iraq in just a few hours could educate thousands of children.

“To put things into perspective and maybe help to understand why we maybe need to adjust the way we’re doing things in the world, the conflict in Iraq has displaced over four million people,” Jolie told reporters in New York.

She said an appeal by UNICEF, the UN’s fund for children, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to address the educational needs of many of those children was dwarfed by the cost of US military spending in Iraq.

Angelina Jolie saw firsthand the plight of conflict refugees stranded in the blazing desert near the Syrian-Iraqi border in a visit this week to highlight their ordeal.

The American actress, who is a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, traveled to Syria and Iraq on Monday and Tuesday, the agency said in a statement. Jolie also separately visited U.S. troops in the area.

“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Jolie was quoted as saying by the Geneva-based agency on Tuesday.
