A couple of the biggest names from Hollywood are supporting a new venture here to help meet the basic needs of some students. At a news conference at Campbell Elementary on Wednesday, businessman Doug Pitt, on behalf of his brother, actor Brad Pitt, and Brad’s partner, actress Angelina Jolie, announced the creation of the Care to Learn fund, along with Jim Morris, a businessman and philanthropist from Springfield.
Care to Learn will focus on basic student needs such as hunger, health and hygiene. Brad Pitt, Jolie, Morris and an anonymous person will contribute $3 for every $1 donated by others. They promise to contribute up to $150,000 collectively each year for the next three years.
“To Brad and Angie, a kid is a kid, whether they are in Africa, New Orleans, or Springfield, and there’s an opportunity that we have here that we can do something about it,” said Doug Pitt.
The Care to Learn Fund will be managed and distributed by the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools. Doug Pitt said he recruited his brother’s support through the Jolie-Pitt Foundation that funds various causes. The Pitts and their sisters grew up in Springfield and graduated from Kickapoo High School.
